N.D. authorities investigate oil spill

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- Authorities say an oil spill near Keene in western North Dakota may have flowed into a stock pond where cattle drink and into a creek that drains into Lake Sakakawea.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- Authorities say an oil spill near Keene in western North Dakota may have flowed into a stock pond where cattle drink and into a creek that drains into Lake Sakakawea.

McKenzie County Emergency Manager Jerry Samuelson tells the Bismarck Tribune that he investigated the spill site Thursday, after being alerted by a landowner.

Samuelson says Denver-based Newfield Exploration reported a 100-barrel spill on May 2. The company told authorities the oil was contained to a pit on the well site.

Samuelson says the spill is more than 2 miles long, and it appears there are more than 100 barrels spilled.

State health officials say they didn't initially investigate the spill because the company claimed it had been contained.
